Photographic film is a material for capturing images. Film is available in colour, black and white, positive and negative formats. Film cameras are loaded with a roll of film which is cylindrical in shape and a few centimetres tall. Covered by a protective layer, the inner layer of a film roll is coated with a light-sensitive material, usually silver halide crystals. When the film is exposed to light, an image is recorded.
