Ukiyo-e

Ukiyo-e is a Japanese art form that emerged in the 17th century. The term translates to “pictures of the floating world”, symbolising the transient nature of everyday life and pleasure. Ukiyo-e art includes paintings and woodblock prints which depict various aspects of Japanese life. These include urban and mythical scenes, famous Kabuki actors and natural landscapes. Notable Ukiyo-e artists include Katsushika Hokusai and Tōshūsai Sharaku.
