A shutter is a part of a camera that consists of adjustable blinds or metal blades. Shutter speed refers to the length of time that a shutter is open. Working with the aperture settings, the shutter controls the exposure—the amount of light travelling into the camera. The higher the shutter speed, the less light is admitted through the lens to the photographic film or paper.
