The Iron Age followed the Bronze Age, marking a period in which iron was commonly used to make weapons and tools. Iron is harder than bronze and iron ore is more widely and readily available in nature. Iron production was present in the Central Plains during the late Western Zhou period in the 8th century BCE. Ironware gradually became popular during the Warring States period and further replaced bronze during the Qin and Han dynasties.
