Horizontal Scroll

Horizontal Scroll

Also known as a handscroll, a horizontal scroll is a format for mounting which can be unrolled from right to left. This format features a continuous painting that unfolds horizontally, allowing viewers to gradually experience the artwork as they move along the scroll. The horizontal scroll often consists of a painting or calligraphy on a long sheet of silk or xuan paper mounted to a decorative backing material like coloured silk cloth. Wooden rods are attached at both ends, providing support and enabling the easy rolling and unrolling of the scroll.
