Duilan (Chinese couplet) is a pair of associated lines that demonstrates the writer’s skill as a poet and calligrapher. Traditionally displayed vertically from right to left, duilian follow strict rules of parallelism in terms of word arrangement, meaning and rhyme scheme. The couplets are a demonstration of the poet’s command of the Chinese language, and the aesthetics associated with the calligraphic style.
