Oracle bone inscriptions refer to an early form of Chinese script found on tortoise shells and animal bones, particularly in use during the late Shang dynasty through the Western Zhou period. Either inscribed with a sharp tool or written with a brush, these writings documented political, economic, military and ritual matters, as well as divinatory content during the Shang and Zhou.
