Pairs of colours which, when combined or mixed, cancel each other out. This means that when combined they become grayscale, and when placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast and reinforce each other’s colour value. This concept is seen clearly on the colour wheel, where complementary pairs are located directly across from each other. Examples of complementary colours are red and green, blue and orange and yellow and purple.
