A red seal is a small inscription used by artists or collectors on works of Chinese calligraphy or paintings to indicate authorship. The seals typically have the author’s initial or pseudonym carved onto a metal, rock, horn, ceramic or wooden stamp, which is then used with red paste to stamp the artwork. In conjunction with an inscription, the red seal can serve as the artist’s signature.
