Nihonga translates to Japanese painting. The Nihonga modern art movement emerged in Japan during the late 19th century amidst waves of westernisation and modernisation. The movement sought to reinvigorate traditional Japanese art by combining Western and Japanese techniques, such as employing the ideas of naturalism and realism into ink paintings with Japanese subjects.
