A pan is a water vessel used in ancient washing rituals during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. It has a flat and shallow basin, a foot ring or three legs at the base and two side handles. A pan acts as a receiver when water is poured during washing rituals. When filled with water, it can be used as a mirror.
