A ding is a vessel used for cooking and serving food. It has two loop handles and its body is either round or rectangular. A ding with a rounded body often has three legs, while a square ding is supported by four legs. Legend has it that nine colossal ding vessels were cast by order of King Yu of the Xia dynasty as a symbol of his power and divine mandate to rule.
