Zhishi (simple ideograph) is a method of using symbols to represent abstract concepts in creating Chinese characters. For instance, the character shang (above) is formed by adding a vertical stroke above a horizontal line; conversely, xia (below) is made up of a vertical stroke below a horizontal line.
